SPECIAL EVENT: Surf Fundraiser Yoga Class

  • Elevate Unit 11, Cargo 2, Wapping Wharf Bristol, BS1 6ZA United Kingdom (map)

Calling all yogi surfers, want to be surfers and never surfed surfers! This is your chance to join a special surf themed yoga class. Where for one hour your mats will be your surfboards and the Elevate floor will be the Californian ocean.

Facilitated by Stephen Lightbown – yoga teacher, published poet and disabled surfer. Stephen is a wheelchair user who teaches from his chair. He will guide you through a calming practice which works for you, while leaving you empowered by what your body is capable of.

Tailored to suit every body type, this special fundraiser yoga class will invite you to uncover new dimensions within your own body and rediscover forgotten sensations all whilst finding that inner surfer stoke. Whether you want to practice with all of your body, seated or lying down, this 60 minute class is for you. Adaptations will be offered and Stephen ensures a welcoming environment where you'll feel right at home (on the ocean).

This class will be on a pay what you want basis and all proceeds will go towards helping Stephen represent England for the second time at the ISA Para World Surf Championships at Huntington Beach, California.

In English surfing there is no direct funding to the athletes. This means that all costs need to be covered by the athlete either through sponsorship, own funds or fundraising. By competing Stephen can show the next generation of disabled surfers that surfing is something they can try, especially with the hope of para surfing being included in the 2028 Paralympics for the first time.

Following the yoga practice, everyone is welcome to stay for an informal coffee, chat and to talk more with Stephen about accessible yoga and para surfing.
